Friends of Animals (FOA) is reminding pet parents to spay or neuter their dogs and cats during this coming spring season. When your pet has an unplanned pregnancy, it results in abandonment of the offspring or sending them to shelters, and in either case, the end is the same – a cruel death. FOA is […]
Animal Welfare
For lovers of animals, animal welfare is an important issue. Cruelty and negligence toward animals is the norm rather than the exception. Animals are mistreated on farms, in the wild, in laboratories and in industries which profit from animal abuse.
Most countries recognize that animals have the right to “Five Freedoms” which were first proposed in the United Kingdom in the 1960s:
- Freedom from Hunger and Thirst
- Freedom from Discomfort
- Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease
- Freedom to Express Normal Behavior
- Freedom from Fear and Distress
Promotion of animal welfare can be on many levels. First, there is the legislative level. Laws already exist which prevent certain types of animal cruelty but there is still much to be done. Public campaigns are also important, to convince the public to treat animals humanely and not support those who don’t. On the individual level, volunteering at an animal shelter or animal welfare organization can do a world of good. Getting involved in conservation is also a positive action.

ASPCA-Animal Abandonment
Animals are abandoned at any time of year, but winter can be a particularly hard time for them. In summer they can find shade and hopefully a water source. When temperature plummet in winter, it’s sometimes impossible for them to find shelter. Left to fend for themselves, many animals die. We, along with the ASPCA, […]
When is it Time to Switch Vets
Most of us, thank goodness, are fortunate to have a good relationship with our veterinarians. But for those searching for a vet or beginning to have questions about the current vet, here are some hints to help you search or decide it’s time to change vets. When you ask for a tour of the facilities […]
DNA Helping Shelter Dogs
The Peninsula Humane Society and SPCA in California has a unique idea to encourage adoption of shelter dogs. The shelter is investigating DNA testing to discover the breeds present in each individual dog. To this end, 12 dogs who looked like chihuahua mixes were chosen and put to the test. Recently, a group of animal […]
A Different Kind of Abuse
We all have preferences about what kind of dog we like. And there are so many breed types to choose from including hair length and all shapes and sizes. But how did these dogs (and other pets) develop? The ancestors of modern dog breeds certainly didn’t look the same. We know that breeds were developed […]
When euthanasia goes wrong
My 180 pound Alaskan Malamute was taken to Three Trails Animal Hospital on December 10, 2012, where Dr. Rhodes’ opinion was that Grizz had lymphoma. I left with a prescription for prednisone, and no hope. In the early morning hours of December 21, Grizz could no longer walk, so in a few hours myself, roommate, […]

Preventing Dog Theft
Dog theft is on the rise. Laboratories and private people, all although they don’t question where the dogs comefrom, are willing to pay, often large sums for a pet. Sometimes dogs are kidnapped and the thieves will demand ransom for their return. Dogs are lumped together with property crimes, making it difficult to determine the […]
“Bully” Breed Bans

The main so-called “bully” breeds are the Pitbull and the Rottweiler. <ads media=googleAds1 /> Breed Specific Legislation or BSL as it is known, bans or regulates some dog […]
