Persian Jirds, like other Jirds, are relatives of the Mongolian Gerbil. They can be found in rocky mountain areas from Eastern Turkey to Pakistan. They are about 6 inches long with tails 1 1/2 times the length of the body. Tails are used for balance. Ears and eyes are large. In the wild, Jirds live in burrows and eat small insects, seeds and flowers.
As pets Jirds can live comfortably in large size cages or aquariums. They love to store their food and it’s not unusual when cleaning the cage to find hoards of food.
Toys can be untreated wood pieces especially made for gnawing pets, cardboard rolls & an exercise wheel. Wood shavings like aspen which is low in dust, shredded paper, megazorb, or corn cob bedding can be used as bedding. They should have shelves to climb on as well.
Meal worms are a favorite food and can be found at your pet food supplier. As treats they can be fed small amounts of cooked meat, fruits, veggies, sunflower seeds, even some dry cat food. They will enjoy a millet spray in the cage too.
Jirds are nocturnal so most of their activity will occur at night. Handling your Persian Jird will help get them used to you.
