Origin
Though originally native to Africa, Hedgehogs are now bred in captivity in North America and have become very interesting pets. Hedgehogs are about 5-8 inches long with a lifespan of 4-6 years. The underside of the Hedgehog is covered with soft fur, but prickly spines cover their backs. The spines lie flat when the Hedgehog is calm. If a young Hedgehog is handled consistently, it will be used to human contact and won’t feel threatened and roll up in a ball when picked up. Check the laws in your area to make sure keeping Hedgehogs as pets is legal.
Care requirements
Cages should be about 3 feet square. The bands of wire on the cage should be close enough that your Hedgehog’s head won’t get stuck. The floor of the cage should be solid and covered with wood shavings made specifically for this purpose. You can include a shallow pan for use as a litter box. Also a box or small wooden house where the Hedgehog can hide and a solid wheel with open sides for exercise. Hedgehogs are insectivores. There are prepared foods for Hedgehogs, but you can supplement with treats once in a while such as fruit, hard-boiled or scrambled egg (without milk), mince, boiled chicken and even baby food.
