What is the Sulcata Tortoise like?
The Sulcata Tortoise is native to Africa but has become a popular pet in North America. Adults are 2-2 1/2 feet long and can weigh 100-200 lbs. Since they grow so large, you might consider keeping them outdoors.
How do I care for and feed the Sulcata Tortoise?
They need a good size fenced-in area. The fence should fit well into the ground so the Tortoise cannot dig its way out. They can’t swim and will drown, so keep them away from pools. They should also have a dry place to keep out of the rain as they are native to dry areas. They like to burrow and will nibble on grass in the yard. You can include in their diet alfalfa hay, carrots, greens and a small amount of fruit. Avoid giving them cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, tomatoes, lettuce and any beans or nuts. Check as to which plants are poisonous to your Tortoise and avoid insecticides. Provide fresh drinking water daily.
