The Borneo Short-tailed Python’s natural habitat is low elevation areas, the edge of Borneo’s swamps, Western Malaysia, East of Sumatra’s mountain range and nearby islands.
Adult Borneos average 4-6 feet long and with larger ones weighing about 30 lbs. In captivity their lifespan is more than 20 years.
Borneos come in various colors; the head is usually pale yellow to pale brown. Patterns have mixed colors including tan, brown, dark brown, cream, yellow. Patterns sometimes have dark margins.
Borneos are carnivores and eat mice and rats. These can be purchased frozen and fed when thawed once a week. Fresh water should always be available.
Enclosures for snakes should always be escape-proof. The cage should be long enough for the Borneo to stretch out and wide enough to turn around. Good ventilation is very important. Provide the snake with branches to climb and a rock or platform to bask on as well as a box for hiding.
Cage floor coverings can be newspaper, paper towels, carpet, soil, gravel as long as they don’t dry out the cage. Humidity is necessary for Borneos – about 65-75%.
Temperatures in the enclosure should be about 85 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, down to 80 at night. The basking area can be up to 7 degrees higher than the rest of the enclosure.
Most Borneos have calm and docile temperaments, but some can be high-strung.
