Heater and Fireplace Pet Safety

Cat Fire

With winter, our heaters and fireplaces are working overtime. We enjoy the warmth they offer and our pets do too. But we need to be extra vigilant with pets as they don’t understand the dangers that these objects can pose. Here are some ideas to help keep your pets, your children and yourselves safe.

  • If you have a gas heater, make sure the damper is adjusted properly to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Fireplaces should have a fireguard screen, tall and wide enough so the cat can’t squeeze over or behind it.
  • If it’s feasible, try gating the heater and/or fireplace.
  • Make sure your pets don’t get too close to fireplaces or heaters to avoid accidental burns.
  • A regular fireplace should have adequate vents to prevent inhaling smoke or carcinogens.
  • Don’t play near the fireplace or heater – accidents can happen.
  • Birds are very sensitive and should be kept in another room or far away from the heat source.
  • Check batteries in smoke alarms regularly.
  • Don’t leave the fireplace or heater working if you leave the house.

We hope these tips help you have a safe winter.
