Ugly Pet Contests

Ugly Dog

I recently read an article written by Dr. Patty Khuly on her blog, “Fully Vetted” about ugly pet contests. I find myself in full agreement with her assessments of such a contest.

As Dr. Khuly says, “they’re almost always genetically diseased, surgically altered or otherwise afflicted with extreme veterinary conditions.”

Do we really want to be a party to such contests, making fun of pets we’re supposed to love.

I believe it’s exploitation of some pets’ afflictions. And many times, these problems can be corrected, but because of such a contest, owners are inclined not to remedy the situations. In my book, that’s animal cruelty.

I realize that sometimes these contest may promote the adoption of pets that some of us might not consider, but there must be better ways to bring these pets to the attention of the public.

Please give us your opinion. What do you think?
