Obesity in Dogs and Cancer Connection

Obese Dog

News from Dr. Damian Dressler and his blog, “Dog Cancer News”.

Here’s why, in the fight to avoid or treat cancer in dogs, it’s important to keep them slim, as Dr. Dressler explains.

Fat cells secrete something called adiponectin which offers cancer protection. When fat is burned, adiponectin is released in small amounts in dogs who are overweight and store more fat. Lean dogs secrete more adiponectin than obese ones and so have more protection against cancer.

Of course there are many causes of cancer and many ways to fight it. You can lower the odds of your dog getting cancer by keeping him/her lean.
