The Cove

The Cove

The Cove is an award-winning documentary which documents the slaughter of more than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises off the coast of Taiji, Japan every year. The filmmakers organized a covert mission to expose the killing of dolphins. The dolphins’ meat, which contains high levels of mercury, is sold in Asia, often labeled as whale meat.

The movie also campaigns against the sale of dolphins for entertainment purposes. Although most of the dolphins are slaughtered, a few choice specimens are sold to the dolphin display industry. Dolphins are not meant to be kept in captivity. These dolphins are contained in small tanks and forced to preform through deprivation of food.

The film has been shown in Japan and has been making waves there. However, the killing has not stopped yet. As part of the efforts to save these animals, the filmmakers have created an online petition to President Obama, Vice President Biden, the Japanese Ambassador to the U.S., the Prime Minister and Minister of Health in Japan.
