Where does the Siberian come from?
The Siberian cat was brought to the U.S. around 1990. It is difficult to obtain information from Russia as to the Siberian’s origin. It has a lot of similarities with the Maine Coon Cat and the Norwegian Forest Cat. However it is known that the breed has existed for several centuries.The Siberian is the national cat of Russia.
What does the Siberian look like?
The Siberian is a large, strong, sturdy cat weighing between 10-20 lbs. Ears are medium large with rounded tips and tilt forward. Eyes are round and mainly colored yellowish green. The coat is medium long, the undercoat dense in winter and somewhat thinner in summer. Siberians have 3 layers of fur which protects them against the severe Russian weather – down, closest to the skin, awn hairs, middle hairs and guard hairs, the topcoat. Some owners claim the Siberian is hypo-allergenic, but so far there is no scientific proof that this is the case. Colors are all the colors of cats.
Does the Siberian make a good pet?
The Siberian is an energetic, agile cat and can jump quite high,so be careful of leaving knick-knacks around. They are extremely loyal to their families, even will welcome them home at the door. They are very intelligent and don’t seem to be shy around strangers. They are very affectionate and make good lap cats. They have dog-like qualities and can be taught tricks.
