Also known as the Jamthuind, the Swedish Elkhound, a Spitz-type dog, dates back to the Stone Age and may have been the first dog to stand by man. It is rarely seen outside of Sweden. The Swedish Elkhound is the national dog of Sweden.
What does the Swedish Elkhound look like?
The Swedish Elkhound is wolf-like in appearance, 22-26 inches tall and weighs 66 lbs. The head is long with a straight muzzle and wide nose. Eyes are small and dark brown in color. Ears are set high, erect and pointed. The tail is set high and rolls over the back. The coat5 is long and hard. The undercoat is soft and woolly. Colors are light or dark gray, sometimes with light or cream on the muzzle, cheeks and throat. Daily brushing and combing are necessary.

The Swedish Elkhound is a hardy, courageous dog. Their personality is balanced and calm. They are gentle with children but may show dominance over other dogs. Intelligent, they learn quickly and are eager to please. They are not adaptable to apartment living as they need lots of room to run and vigorous exercise. They don’t do well in warm climates.
