Spitz-type dogs are a type characterized by long, thick, and often white fur, and pointed ears and muzzles. Their tail is usually curled over the dog’s back. Although it is not clear where they originate from, most of the Spitz-types seen today are from the Arctic. Through selective breeding, Spitz types have been developed to fit three purposes: hunting, herding, and pulling sleds.
Spitz types are well suited to living in harsh northern climates. They often have a dense, insulating, waterproof undercoat and small ears to protect from frostbite. They also have thick fur on their paws to protect from sharp ice.
Because these animals are so attractive, breeders have created versions of spitz type dogs as companion dogs. However, since these dogs retain wolf-like characteristics they are often hard to train.
