Afghan Hound is the oldest sighthound known. Afghans are elegant looking but clown-like at play.
What is the origin of Afghan Hound ?
As the name mentions, this dog comes from Afghanistan and is the oldest of the sighthound dog breed . They may even be the first of the sighthounds. They are believed to share common a ancestor with [Pharaoh Hound] and are commonly known by different names such as Kuchi Hound, Tāzī, Balkh Hound, Baluchi Hound, Barutzy Hound, Shalgar Hound, Kabul Hound, Galanday Hound . They were originally trained to hunt gazelle , hares and wolves .
What does the Afghan Hound look like?
Afghans are 24-29 inches tall and weigh about 50-60 lbs. Eyes are dark and almond-shaped. The nose is black. The tail has a distinct ring or curve at the end. While hair on the back is short, it is long, silky and thick on the flanks, ribs, forequarters and legs. Ears are long and covered with the same silky hair and well-feathered as are the feet. Colors are Black, Black and silver, Black and tan, blue, blue and cream, cream, red, silver, and white. Some Afghans have a black mask. The coat requires lots of care. Brush the coat only before bathing, not in-between baths. You can comb the hair after bathing. Put a cap on the ears to keep them clean when eating.
What is the temperament of the Afghan Hound?
Typically, the Afghan Hound is an elegant, dignified dog. They have an independent streak which can lead to non-responsiveness to commands. Afghans can be aloof, but when playing, behave like clowns. They are sensitive and should be trained with a kind hand. Early socialization is recommended. They do better with older, gentle children. Afghans need lots of vigorous exercise. Due to their strong prey drive, they should be leashed when out walking. Off-leash should be in a secure fenced area. They don’t enjoy apartment living unless they have lots of exercise.
What is the Afghan Hound used for?
These days they are seldom used for hunting. Afghans are excellent at lure coursing, do well in agility trials and as therapy dogs. They are loving family companions.
