What is the origin of the Sloughi?

The Sloughi was developed by the Berbers in North Africa sometime around the 13th century. It was thought of so highly that only nobility could own a Sloughi. North African tribes use the Sloughi for guarding and hunting.

What does the Sloughi look like?

The Sloughi is a lean-looking dog with its bones readily visible. Height is 24-28 inches and weight 40-65 lbs. The head is round with a slightly pointed muzzle. Eyes are small and dark. Ears are triangular with rounded tips and pendant. The tail is thin, curved at the end. The coat is smooth and fine. Colors are sand, fawn, drab white, brindle or black, all with black coloring on the face. Brush infrequently to remove dead hair.

What is the temperament of the Sloughi?

The Sloughi is a docile, obedient dog, very loving with the family. They are very mistrustful of strangers. Sloughis are hunters and will consider any small animals as prey and give chase. They can live in apartments as long as they are exercised sufficiently. They love to run off-leash, but should do so in a very secure area. Sloughis don’t like cold winters and should live indoors.

What is the Sloughi used for?

While used for hunting and guarding in North Africa, the Sloughi has been used for racing in Europe and America. It is an excellent companion dog.
