What is the origin of the English Setter?

The ancestry of the English Setter includes dogs trained to sit when they located game. In the 1800s, an Englishman, Edward Lawerack, developed the English Setter’s character and shape of today.

What does the English Setter look like?

English Setters are 23-27 inches tall and weigh 45-80 lbs. The head is long with a square muzzle and pendant flews (the overhanging upper lips). Ears are low-set and hanging. Hazel eyes are large and round. The feathered tail is carried straight and level and tapers to a point. The coat is flat and silky, medium length. Colors are black and white, white with lemon, orange or chestnut speckling or tricolor (black, white and red). Brushing weekly will remove dead hairs and dirt.

English Setters are friendly, easygoing dogs. Patient training with a gentle hand results in a well-behaved, attentive dog. They are very good with children and get along well with other dogs. English Setters love attention and are very affectionate. They need daily exercise and a fenced-in yard, being sure they can’t dig their way out.
