What is the origin of the Bluetick Coonhound?
An American dog originating in Tennessee, Coonhounds are probably descended from English Foxhounds and French hounds. Blueticks are known as “cold-nosed’ trackers as they sniff out trails that are older and colder. General Lafayette presented George Washington with 5 of the French hounds.
What does the Bluetick Coonhound look like?
Females are 21-25 inches tall and weigh45-65 lbs. Males are 22-27 inches tall and weigh 55-80 lbs. The broad head has a long muzzle ending in a large, black nose. Ears are long, pendant and set low. The coat requires brushing every other week. Ears need weekly checking.
What is the temperament of the Bluetick Coonhound?
Blueticks are highly intelligent dogs known to solve problems on their own. They are eager to please and learn quickly, but should have early obedience training. They are naturally social dogs and are good with children although should have supervision with young ones. Since they are hunting dogs, Blueticks may view small animals as prey. Early socialization with other pets may help avoid problems. Blueticks are very vocal and have loud howling voices. Unless you’re out hunting with your Blueticks, it’s best to walk them on a leash as if they sniff out prey, they will take off. Blueticks are very energetic and require lots of vigorous exercise. They don’t adapt well to apartment living.
What is the Bluetick Coonhound used for?
