The FDA warns that there is a possible risk of fractures to cats with the use of the Vet Jet transdermal vaccination system device.
The device, made by Bioject Inc., is sold exclusively as the delivery system for the Merial product, Purevax, a feline leukemia vaccine. The vaccination is delivered throught the skin.
Three adverse events using the Vet Jet have been reported in kittens.
Merial is investigating the cases. In two of them there is a possibility that the nozzle was not locked securely causing fracture of the femur (thigh bone).
The FDA asks that persons wishing to report problems with Vet Jet device contact Merial. Problems can also be reported to the FDA using Form FDA 1932a.
