Laser therapy has proven effective in treating arthritis in dogs, cats, horses and other pets. It has given relief to an estimated 90% or more of geriatric and arthritis patients.
Cold laser therapy uses light to stimulate cells and increase blood circulation. The Class IV lasers allow better penetration in a shorter amount of time. Lasers are being used to speed healing after surgery and for treating infections as well as the inflammation and pain of arthritis. Laser therapy is a non-invasive treatment and the pet does not have to be sedated.
After treatments, even pets with chronic arthritis pain are more mobile and more comfortable. For pets unable to tolerate NSAIDs,(non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) this is a wonderful alternative therapy.
Many veterinarians trained in the use of lasers use a number of treatment for arthritis including NSAIDs, glucosamine/chondroitin, diets and more. The Class IV laser provides another tool for pain control making the pet feel better and increasing their ability to enjoy life once again.
This doesn’t mean that laser therapy is a cure-all for arthritis. But after examination, x-rays and diagnosis, it gives those pets who are candidates a good chance for a better quality of life.
Costs vary and of course it depends on the number of treatments necessary. Some quotes have been in the $330-$350 range for a series of treatments. When you count the savings that could come and the relief your pet gets, it could be well worth the cost.
