What is the origin of the Tibetan Spaniel?

Buddhists believe the lion to be an important symbol that followed Buddha like a dog. The lion-like dogs that followed the lamas were thought to be symbols of the lion. For centuries they were used as watchdogs by the lamas. Its relatives are probably the Pekingnese, the Pug and the Japanese Spaniel. The Tibbies first appeared in the U.S. in the 1960s.

What does the Tibetan Spaniel look like?

Tibbies are small dogs, 9-15 lbs. and 10 inches tall. The head is small with a blunt muzzle. Ears are pendant with some feathering at the bottom. Eyes are oval, chestnut in color. The plumed tail curves over the back. The coat is medium long and silky and lies flat. Colors are all colors and mixtures of dogs. The coat needs brushing and combing at least twice a week.

What is the temperament of the Tibetan Spaniel?

Tibbies are independent, intelligent, bold little dogs. They can be stubborn and should have early training and socialization to help avoid problems. Training should be done with a kind hand as these dogs are very sensitive. They are lively, happy dogs, alert to any noise. They are good with children as long as they are not handled roughly. They are good with other dogs and pets but wary of strangers. Exercise can include short daily walk always on a leash and playtime.
