Are your cat’s eating habits driving you to drink? Well, research scientists at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia may have found the answer as to why cats turn their noses up at some foods.
Cats don’t have the ability to discern sweet flavors as they have no sweet taste receptors. But they do have at least 12 bitter taste receptors which could explain why they can detect some toxins in plants and prey and certain chemicals in foods.
Perhaps this is why cats can be such finicky eaters. They can taste even the most subtle unappetizing flavors in some food.
If your cat is one of those fussy eaters, you might want to try offering homemade or raw food. Make the adjustment gradually so as not to upset kitty’s tummy. Over a period of about a week, begin by adding a small amount of the new food to regular meals, increasing the amount each time until the transition is complete to the new food.
