In the 1840s hunters in Georgia wanted a dog that would hunt and tree raccoons faster. They crossed Red Irish Foxhounds with other hunting dogs and created the Redbone Coonhound. The Redbone may have been named after Peter Redbone, A Tennessee coonhound enthusiast.

Height is 21-27 inches, weight 45-70 lbs. depending on gender. Ears are moderately low-set and pendant. Eyes are round. The tail is saber-like. The coat is short and smooth. Colors are solid red with a dark muzzzle, sometimes a small amount of white on chest and feet. Weekly brushing keeps the coat free of dead hair.
