The Lhasa Apso is an ancient breed from Tibet and is named the the city of Lhasa. It was bred only by holy men and nobles. The 13th Dalai Lama decided to give them as gifts to visiting officials. In that way the breed spead throughout the world arriving in America in the 1930s.
What does the Lhasa Apso look like?
The Lhasa’s coat is long, plentiful, straight and heavy. The hair falls over the eyes which are deep-set and dark. The ears are heavy and feathery. Hieght is 10-11 inches and weight is 13-15 lbs. Colors are honey, slate, sand, black, brindle and multicolored brown, white and black. The Lhasa’s color may change as it gets older. Its tail is carried over its back.
What is the Lhasa Apso’s temperament?
The Lhasa Apso is intelligent and affectionate but it can be stubborn. It may not put up with children especially if treated roughly. The Lhasa is alert and has a keen sense of hearing. It is loyal to its master but wary of strangers.
What are the Lhasa Apso’s uses?
Although small, the Lhasa’s keen sense of hearing will alert its master if someone is approaching. It can be a lively companion and has been known to live a bit more than 20 years.
