Governor Arnold Schwarzennegger vetoed a California bill to prevent landlords from requiring tenants to declaw their cats.
The bill asked that a $2500 fine be levied for each time declawing or devocalitzation is required in a landlord-tenant agreement. Landlords would not have been allowed to advertise, discouraging owners whose pets are not declawed or devocalized. In addition, landlords would not be able to give preferential treatment to those owners who declawed or devocalized their pets.
The bill was passed by the California Assembly in May by a vote of 63-7 and passed by the California Senate by a vote of 21-12 early in September. However the Governor has vetoed the bill.
