What is the origin of the Plott Hound?

In 1750, Schweisshunds from Germany were brought to the U.S. by Johannes Georg Plott, a 16 year old immigrant to the Great Smokey Mountains. These dogs and their offspring hunted large animals. The Plott Hound was strengthened by crosses with other breeds in the early
1900s. The Plott was recognized as North Carolina’s state mascot in 1989.

What does the Plott Hound look like?

Plotts are hardy dogs, 20-24 inches tall and weigh 40-60 lbs. depending on gender. Ears are large and long. eyes are prominent. The tail is long and saber-like. The coat is short, dense and smooth. Colors are any shade of brindle, sometimes with a black saddle, solid black, black with brindle trim or buckskin. Regular brushing will keep the coat shiny. Ears need checking daily.

What is the temperament of the Plott Hound?

Plott Hounds are courageous hunters. They are intelligent and sometimes willful. They want to please their humans and learn quickly. Plotts should have early positive obedience training and socialization. They love to be with children and are good family pets. They are loyal and loving with their family. Plotts needs a long daily walk and a run in a secure area. They love to swim as well. They don’t do well in apartments. This is a breed that is happy living outdoors, but provide proper shelter and security.

What is the Plott Hound used for?

The Plott Hound is mainly used for hunting and can face down large animals such as bears and wildcats. As fearless as they are as hunters, Plotts are very loving and protective with their family.
