The Bergamasco is a powerful dog whose abundant coat is made up of long cords of hair.

What is the origin of the Bergamasco?

The Phoenicians brought some hairy dogs to Europe more than 2,000 years ago. The Bergamasco was developed from some of these dogs in Northern Italy in the province of Bergamo, hence its name.

What does the Bergamasco look like?

It is a powerful, medium sized dog, 21-24 inches tall and weighs 57-84 lbs. The large head ends in a black nose. Eyes are shades of chestnut. Ears are triangular and pendant. The tail is thick and carried low. The abundant coat is long and rough, made up of what is called flocks or cords of hair. Face hair covers the eyes for protection from glare. Colors are mottled gray or solid black.

What is the temperament of the Bergamasco?

Bergamascos are highly intelligent dogs, able to problem solve. Early positive, consistent training will establish good behavior. They adore children, but may be reserved with strangers. They are good with other dogs if they are not threatening. They are okay with cats if raised with them. They should have long walks every day. Bergamascos don’t adapt well to apartment living.

What is the Bergamasco used for?

The Bergamasco is an excellent sheepdog. It is also used as a guard dog and has served as a therapy dog. The Bergamasco is a loving, protective family companion.
