Sometimes called the Bobtail and bred in England centuries ago, the Old English Sheepdog’s origins are somewhat cloudy. It might have been bred from a hairy Russian dog or it might be related to several other dogs including the Briard, Bergamasco, Barbone and Deerhound.

The Old English Sheepdog is an imposing looking dog with its large, square head and robust body. Height is about 26-28 inches tall and weight is 70-100 lbs., females being slightly less. Ears are small and lie flat. Eyes are dark brown. It is tail-less or if born with a tail, it is docked where that practice continues. The coat is thick and shaggy. Colors are grey, grizzle, blue or blue merle with or without white markings. The long coat needs frequent brushing to avoid becoming matted and dirty.
