Blue-Tongued Skink

Blue-Tongued Skink

The Blue-Tongued Skink is found in Northern Australia, Irian Jaya and Southern New Guinea. It lives in forested areas where there is lots of ground cover for them to hide in and hunt in the leaves. They grow up to 2 feet long and live up to 20 years. This Skink is a docile creature, very relaxed.

Housing for one adult is a terrarium 3 feet lon, 1 1/2 feet wide and 1 foot tall, but can be larger. Bedding should be fairly loose, coconut fiber or dirt. They sleep partially covered. The basking area should be 90-95 degrees. The rest of the area can be 75-85 degrees. A drinking bowl should be placed at the cooler end of the enclosure. If you live in a dry area, it’s advisable to mist the terrarium every 3 days to provide humidity. A UVB bulb the length of the enclosure will provide 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark. The Skink lizard should be kept alone to avoid fighting.

Diet includes fruits, leafy greens and vegetables, ground turkey or duck and commercial monitor lizard food. Skinks will also eat insects and small mice. With this diet, the only supplement that can be added once a week is powdered calcium.
