What is the origin of the Kooiker Hound (Kooikerhondje)

This breed was developed in the 16th century to toll (lure) ducks for hunters. Kooikers were almost extinct after World War II, but thanks to the efforts of dog breeder, Baroness von Hardenbroeck, they have made a comeback and are becoming known in the U.S. and Canada.

What does the Kooiker Hound look like?

Kooikers are 14-16 inches tall and weigh 20-35 lbs. The body is square. Ears are long and pendant with feathering colored black at the tips (called earrings). Tails are densely feathered. The coat is thick, water-repellent and medium long. It can be slightly wavy or straight. The undercoat is dense. The bi-color coat is white and chestnut. Weekly brushing will keep the coat neat.

What is the temperament of the Kooiker Hound?

Kooikers are intelligent, active dogs. They take easily to positive training but do not respond to harshness. They will get along with other pets if raised with them, but use caution with other dogs and small animals. Kooikers accept children who do not behave boisterously. They are affectionate with the family but reserved with strangers. They become protective and bark when they feel the family is threatened. Kooikers can adjust to apartment living as long as they have a park or secure area nearby where they can work off their abundant energy.

What is the Kooiker Hound used for?

In the Netherlands, they were used to toll (lure) ducks into water where hunters could catch them easily. Kooikers are excellent watchdogs and family companions.
