The Lapphund is native to Finland where it has been known for centuries. It was used in reindeer herding by the Sami people living in what is now territory divided between Finland, Sweden, Norway and Russia.

• What does the Finnish Lapphund look like?

The Lapphund is a medium size dog, approximately 16-20 inches tall and weighing about 33-53 lbs. The head is cone-shaped with a very black nose. The eyes are large and dark chestnut with a ring of lighter colored hair around them. Ears are short, erect and can be pointed or slightly folded. The tail is carried rolled over the back. The double coat is thick and stiff, long except on the head, muzzle and legs. Colors are black, chestnut, white, red, wolf-sable, or black and tan. Brush regularly to keep the coat in condition.

The Finnish Lapphund is an alert, friendly dog. It is not aggressive although can be a good watchdog as it will bark at unfamiliar sounds. The Lapphund is patient with children, even young ones. They are active dogs and should have regular daily walks and runs. With its weather-resistant coat, the Lapphund can even live outdoors.

The Lapphund excels as a sheepdog. They compete in obedience, agility and herding trials and are used as therapy dogs. They make good guard dogs, protecting home and persons. When working in cold areas, Lapphunds need a diet rich in meat and fish.
