What is the origin of the Azawakh?
The Azawakh, a sighthound, is from Mali, a West African nation. The Tuareg, a nomadic Bedouin tribe from Nigeria use these dogs for hunting, protection and as companions. The Azawakh, sometimes called the Tuareg Sloughi is cousin to the Sloughi.
What does the Azawakh look like?
The Azawakh males are 25-29 inches tall and weigh 44-55 lbs. The females are 23 – 27 inches tall and weigh 33-44 lbs. The Azawakh is a sleek, very slender dog whose skin is quite thin and can tear easily. This dog has a high pain tolerance. Ears are pendant. Eyes are large, almond-shaped and dark. The coat is short, close to the skin and silky. Colors are all shades of fawn, brindle, white, black, grey, blue, grizzle, parti-color and all shades of brown. Some have black masks and/or white markings on legs, bibs and tip of the tail. Gentle combing and brushing is recommended.
What is the temperament of the Azawakh?
The Azawakh has an independent, reserved personality. Easily trained, it should be done with a gentle hand, otherwise the Azawakh can become either timid or aggressive and stubborn. They should be trained and continually socialized at an early age. They usually bond with either one person or their family and are gentle and affectionate with those they love. However they are not recommended for families with young children as they may regard rough play as aggression and need constant supervision. They are distrustful of strangers. The Azawakh may show dominance towards other dogs and may view cats and small animals as prey. The Azawakh can adapt to apartment living but should have daily exercise, running in a secure, enclosed area. They are happy as couch potatoes as well.

The Azawakh makes an excellent guard and protection dog. They are used for sight hunting as well. The Azawakh is an excellent companion for people who understand the temperament of this dog.
