Irish farmers wanted an intelligent dog that could act and think on its own. The Irish Terrier fit the farmers needs. In World War I, the Irish Terrier served as messenger for the army. They became popular in America in the 1920s, but today are one of the rarer terriers.

What does the Irish Terrier look like?

The Irish Terrier is about 18 inches tall and weighs 25-27 lbs. The head is long and slightly narrow, sporting a small beard. Ears are small and v-shaped, dropping forward. Ears may need training to set properly, the breeder will explain what to do. Eyes are small. The tail is set high, about 1/4 docked off where this practice continues. The coat is double, wiry outercoat, soft, dense undercoat. Comb once a week, strip twice a year.
