What is the origin of the Pudelpointer?

In the 1800s German hunting enthusiasts, looking for the perfect hunting dog, crossed English Pointers and Poodles. They created what they considered the perfect hunting dog, the Pudelpointer.

What does the Pudelpointer look like?

Pudelpointers are 22-25 inches tall and weigh 45-70 lbs. depending on gender. Ears are low-set, long and hang close to the head. Slight beard and eyebrows are prominent. The coat is wiry, coarse and dense. Colors are chestnut to dark brown and black, sometimes white on the chest and paws. The coat should be brushed weekly.

What is the temperament of the Pudelpointer?

The Pudelpointer is an intelligent, loyal dog. The training should begin early and be consistent and positive. These high energy dogs live to hunt. Pudelpointers bond closely with their family. They are good with other dogs, cats if raised with them, but may consider small animals as prey. They are gentle dogs in the home and good with children. When they are not hunting, they need vigorous long walks and runs. Pudelpointers, with their need for lots of exercise, don’t do well in apartments.
