What is the origin of the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon?

Known also as the Korthals Griffon, this breed was developed through many crossings of different breeds in 1873 by Edward Korthals of Holland. Mr. Korthals then traveled throughout France to promote this new breed. While not as popular today, the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon has a reputation of being one of the best gun dogs.

What does the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon look like?

Males are 22-24 inches tall and weigh 50-70 lbs., females are 20-22 inches tall and weigh 35-50 lbs. The muzzle is short with abundant mustache and eyebrows. Ears are set high and hanging. Eyes are large and round, shades of yellow and brown. the nose is brown. The tail is carried straight or slightly raised and docked where this practice continues. The coat is wiry, straight and water-resistant. The undercoat is fine and soft. Colors are steel gray with brown markings, chestnut brown or roan, white and brown. The coat should be brushed twice a week and hand-stripped as needed.

What is the temperament of the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon?

These Griffons are friendly comical dogs. They are intelligent and train easily and are very willing to please. They are good with children and other dogs. With their strong hunting drive, they may see small animals as prey. They may be reserved with strangers. Pointing Griffons are very devoted and affectionate with their family. They are energetic active dogs and need lots of exercise – long daily walks and/or runs.
