There are more than 4,000 types of lizard in the world. Most live in the tropics.

The largest living lizard in the world is the Komodo Dragon, native to the central archipelago of Indonesia. The Komodo’s average length is 6.6-9.8 feet with tails as long as their bodies. An interesting fact about the Komodo – if no males are available, females are able to lay viable eggs.

The world’s smallest lizard, 3/4 inch, was discovered in 2001 on a tiny Caribbean island off the coast of the Dominican Republic. The Jaragua is named for the organization called Groupe Jaragua in honor of its president and champion of conservation efforts, Yvonne Arias.

Of course, there are all sizes of lizard inbetween the Komodo Dragon and the Jaragua.

Some species have the capability of changing their color to match their mood or when under stress.

Depending on the species of lizard, they can be herbivorous eating only plants, omnivorous eating plants, insects and small animals or carnivorous eating animals including other lizards, snakes and birds. Komodo Dragons will eat carrion.
