Guilt – we’ve all been there and some of us wear it like a cloak, punishing and never forgiving ourselves.
The loss of a pet is heart-wrenching for all of us, the grief as deep as any we’ve ever felt.
But before we’re swallowed up by guilty feelings, we should examine why we feel this way. We tend to questions our decisions – why did we do this or we should have done that. If a pet loss is through unintentional negligence, we keep beating ourselves up.
Instead, perhaps we should focus on the life of the pet, honoring him/her with positive memories. Grieve for your pet, but don’t concentrate on blame. If you have made mistakes, learn from them. Remember, we do what we can with the knowledge we have at the time.
If you don’t forgive yourself, those negative feelings only serve to take away from your pet. Celebrate your pet’s life by allowing the remembrances to give dignity to your pet.
Our pets have a way of letting us know that whatever we do, it is for love of them. And their love is truly unconditional.
