Researchers at Sydney, Australia’s Kolling Institute have developed and tested a vaccine on 30 dogs with advanced melanoma, bone cancer and liver cancer.
So far the results have been positive, slowing the growth of the original tumors and helping to prevent others from occurring.
Dr. Chris Weir, who developed the vaccine, used dogs because their cancers and the treatments for them mirror those in humans.
The vaccine includes cells from the individuals tumor, creating a personalized vaccine which contains a bacteria that stimulates the immune system to kill cancer cells.
Clinical studies of the effect of the vaccine on humans with cancer will hopefully begin within a year. Another contribution our canine pals make to our lives.
