Sometimes, for what appears to be no reason, a dog that is house-trained will revert back to pooping in the house. It can happen once a day or night or more. It can be difficult to try to discover why the dog is behaving this way, but there could be one of several reasons.
In order to rule out any medical conditions that could be causing the behavior, it’s important for your dog to have a thorough examination at the vet.
Ask your yourself these questions:
- Is your dog taking any medication that can cause the problem?
- Have there been any changes in the daily routine?
- Has the environment or weather changed outdoors?
- If your dog poops in the middle of the night, does he bark? Is he fully awake when it happens?
- Have you changed the dog’s diet or feeding time?
If you can’t pinpoint why this is happening, here are a few suggestions that may help.
- Do make a change in the food. Try grain-free with one source of protein.
- Don’t feed your dog after 6 P.M.
- Take your dog out more often.
- Have play sessions in the evening.
- Offer lots of praise when he poops outdoors.
- Try retraining your dog – house-training 101.
- Crate your dog, although this may be a temporary solution to the problem.
If all your efforts fail, it’s a good idea to consult with an animal behaviorist. They are trained to handle these situations and may be able to discover the reason for the behavior.
