Where does the Munchkin come from?
There were short-legged cats found in Europe, but attempts to breed them failed. Munchkins are a U.S. breed. In Louisiana, Sandra Hochenedel, a music teacher, discovered a short-legged cat named Blackberry under a pickup truck. She gave one of Blackberry’s sons, Toulouse to her friend, Kay LaFrance and when he was bred, the Munchkin came to be. The short legs are a natural genetic mutation. Unlike short-legged dogs, Dachshunds and Corgis, Munchkins don’t appear to have spinal problems.
What does the Munchkin look like?
The Munchkin is a medium sized cat. The back legs are a bit longer than the front ones. The chest is broad. The tail is medium length and tapering. There is a long-coated variety as well as the short coats.
Does the Munchkin make a good pet?
The Munchkin loves to play especially with toys and is very active. They are good with children, dogs and other pets. Their short legs don’t cramp their style or impair their quality of life. They behave just like cats with long legs. These loving and sociable cats make great family pets.
