Where does the Elf Cat come from?
Karen Nelson, in the United States, developed the Elf Cat, a cross between the American Curl and the hairless Sphynx. The American Curl is a hearty cat while the Sphynx can have heart disease. Ms. Nelson, after losing a pet Sphynx to heart problems decided to bring out the best of both breeds, creating a healthy and hypoallergenic cat. Ms. Nelson who suffers with cat allergies, began the breeding program in 2007. She found that hairless cats don’t affect her allergies. Some people think the Elf Cat looks like Dobby from Harry Potter films, others like the elf Legolas in Lord of the Rings. We think the cat closely resembles Yoda of Star Wars fame.
What does the Elf Cat look like?
Elf cats are medium to large in size. the can weigh from 3.6 kg. to 6.8 kg. or 10-15 lbs. Their ears are large and should be curled between 90-180 degrees. They have prominent cheekbones and whisker pads. Skin is wrinkled. They have long tapering tails. Some Elf Cats may have a thin layer of soft fur on their bodies. They should be kept out of direct sunlight and protected from cold. To prevent skin infections, bathe regularly. Groom twice weekly at least with sponge baths.
Does the Elf Cat make a good pet?
Elf Cats are gentle, sociable cats and very affectionate and outgoing. They enjoy being handled, are agile and lively. However, as a fairly new and rare breed, they come with a pricetag of about $2,000.
