What is the origin of the Cesky Terrier?

The Cesky (Chess-kee) is originally from Czechoslovakia, now the Czech Republic. In 1949, a gentleman named Frantsek Horak was looking for a small, dark-colored dog with drop ears that could fit in burrows. He bred a Scottish Terrier with a Sealyham Terrier and possibly introduced other terriers. The result is the Cesky Terrier. The breed first appeared in the U.S. in 1987.

What does the Cesky Terrier look like?

Ceskys are small, sturdy dogs, 10-12 inches tall and weigh 13-22 lbs. They have a long head with a well-developed nose, bushy beard, mustache and eyebrows. Eyes are deep-set. Ears are pendant, carried close to the cheeds. The coat is soft and glossy with a slight wave. Ceskys are born black, but lighten from silver to charcoal or brown. The coat should be brushed once or twice a week, clipped every 6-8 weeks. Beard, forelock and eyes should be checked daily and cleaned often.

What is the temperament of the Cesky Terrier?

Ceskys are courageous dogs. Early socialization is important to avoid problems. Ceskys are patient, good with children and other dogs and pets as well. Ceskys are very playful. They love food and train easily, especially when offered treats. Be sure not to overfeed this glutton. They do well living in apartments. But they do need a daily walk and a romp in a secure area.
