What is the origin of the Sussex Spaniel?

The Sussex Spaniel was one of the first breeds registered in the AKC when it was formed in 1884. It’s named for the English county of origin, Sussex. This year, 2009, the Sussex Spaniel is the oldest dog ever to win best dog in show at the Westminster Dog Show.

What does the Sussex Spaniel look like?

The Sussex is long and low, shaped like a rectangle. Height is 13-15 inches tall and weight, 35-45 lbs. The legs are short, forelegs slightly bowed. eyes are large, hazel in color. Ears are fairly feathered, large, thick and pendant. The tail is thickly feathered and can be docked to 5-7 inces where this practice continues. The abundant coat is flat or slightly wavy. Color is golden liver, unique to this breed. The coat should be brushed at least weekly.

What is the temperament of the Sussex Spaniel?

The Sussex is a calm dog at home. Out hunting, it is enthusiastic, barking constantly. Early firm, patient, positive training will help to avoid behavior problems. The Sussex is a gentle dog, great with children, loves everyone. The Sussex gets along with other dogs and cats as well. They should have daily walks and can live in an apartment if exercised sufficiently.

What is the Sussex Spaniel used for?

The Sussex Spaniel is a hunter/retriever. It enjoys being outdoors, likes to swim and track. Most of all it is a loyal, devoted companion.
