The Curly-coated Retriever was developed from the Irish Water Spaniel, the Labrador and the Poodle. Curlies were very popular in England and were used sine the 1700s for retrieving game. They came to the U.S. in 1907.

The Curly is an agile, hardy dog, 23-27 inches tall and weighing 65-80 lbs. The head is long and wedge-shaped. The large eyes are almond-shaped. Ears are pendant and covered with little curls. The straight tail and the coat are tightly curled. Colors are black or liver. Brushing loosens the curls, but when the dog is wet, they spring back.
