The ASPCA advises that double-decked trailers are dangerous and inhumane when used to transport horses.
Double-decker trailers can be used to transport short-necked livestock such as cattle. Horses are taller, with larger heads and longer necks and require more headroom which these trailers simply don’t provide. If horses attempt to stand upright, their unstable footing leads to injuries, trampling and death.
The U.S. House of Representatives is considering a transportation bill, H.R. 7, that includes an ASPCA provision to ban the use of double-decker trailers to transport horses anywhere. Rep. Gardner (R-Co.) submitted an amendment to remove the ban.
You can help by visiting the ASPCA Advocacy Center online and email your representative to reject the Gardner Amendment and pass H.R. 7 with the ASPCA provision. Urge him/her to support the ban on the use of double-decker trailers to transport horses.
