Just when you thought that it is only chicken jerky treats made in China to worry about, here’s another problem China-made dog treat. Sweet potato treats from China are causing health problems in dogs too, according to the Veterinary Information Network (V|N). Dr. Eric Barchas, a veterinarian, says “no jerky, regardless of where it comes from, should be considered safe”.
If your dog has eaten any type of chicken treats or any sweet potato treat and shows any signs of illness, even days later, take him/her to your veterinarian. Symptoms can include diarrhea, vomiting, decreased appetite, lethargy and increased thirst and urination.
The FDA found phorate, an extremely toxic pesticide, in sweet potato treats made by a company in China.
The following companies are known to use Chinese imports in their sweet potato treats:
Beefeaters Sweet Potato Snacks for Dogs (16 varieties)
Canyon Creek Ranch Chicken Yam Good Dog Treats (Nestle Purina Co.)
Drs. Foster & Smith (exact products not named)
Dogswell Veggie Life Variety (4 varieties)
If these treats are implicated in poisoning our dogs, please check labels of all treats to see if they contain jerky ingredients, for dogs, cats and any other pets. If unsure, call the company and ask them which ingredients their treats are made from.
Be careful when buying any treats that are jerky or contain jerky product, regardless of the country of manufacture.
