The Spinone Italiano can trace its roots to the Piedmont region of Italy. At the end of World War II there were few remaining Spinoni. In the 1950s breeders, not wanting to lose this versatile hunting dog, made the effort to reconstruct the Spinone.
What does the Spinone Italiano look like?
The Spinone is a robustly built dog, 22-28 inches tall and 64-86 lbs. depending on gender. The muzzle is long and squarish. Ears are long, pendant, almost triangular in shape. Eyes are large, round and ochre-colored. The tail is carried down or horizontally and docked where this practice continues. The coat is stiff, wiry and flat, short to medium long. Colors are solid white, white with orange or chestnut markings, orange or brown roan with or without markings. Coat needs weekly brushing with occasional hand stripping of face and feet.

Spinoni (plural) get along well with everyone. They are gentle and more calm and easygoing than most pointers. They love children and other dogs and animals. They are highly intelligent and willing to please. Spinoni are devoted to their family. Exercise can be daily walks. Spinoni will jog with you right at your side. The yard should have a secure high fence to discourage jumping.
