February’s dog is the Basset Hound.
Although the Basset Hound may look sad, to know one is to be charmed by their clownish antics.
Most people associate the Basset Hound with those shoes “Hush Puppies”, but the breed is much, much older than that. They became popular in France during the 1800’s.
What does the Basset Hound look like?
The Basset Hound weighs about 40-60 lbs. and the average height is about 14 inches. It has a well-proportioned head with pendulous lips and very long ears. If the ears are pulled forward they reach beyond the tip of the nose. Its coat is short and shiny and the colors are usually white with brown or sand markings.
What is the Basset Hound’s temperament?
The Basset Hound is a very friendly dog. It doesn’t bite, although it may be a bit stubborn. Housebreaking may take a little longer than usual. The Basset Hound’s voice is a baying sound which can be annoying to neighbors.
What are the Basset Hound’s uses?
Basset Hounds have been used for hunting fox, rabbit, oppossum and pheasant and has an excellent sense of smell. Its main uses today are as a lovable companion dog.
