What are the origins of the Belgian Tervuren?

Belgian farmers developed this breed to herd livestock and provide security. The short-haired fawn colored Malinois and the all black Groenendael are different from the Tervuren only by coat color. Characteristics are the same.

What does the Belgian Tervuren look like?

The Belgian Tervuren is a medium size dog with a square body. Height can range from 22-26 inches tall and weight is 60-75 lbs. depending on gender. Lips and nose are black. Eyes are slightly almond shape and dark brown. Ears are triangular and erect. The tail reaches to the hocks and is carried low except when the dog is excited. The coat is medium harsh with a dense undercoat. Colors are fawn to mahogony with black hair tips. Weekly brushing will keep the coat in good shape.

What is the temperament of the Belgian Tervuren?

The Belgian Tervuren is a very energetic dog, highly intelligent and very willing and able to learn. It seems to live to please its owner. The Tervuren trains easily and bonds very closely with its family. This dog needs to be with its family and tying it outside can lead to behavior problems. The Tervuren needs a calm, strong, energetic leader who will give it plenty of exercise. It is good with children and usually with other dogs. However it may see cats and other pets as prey.

What are the uses of the Belgian Tervuren?

The Belgian Tervuren excels at herding livestock. They do very well in obedience trials. They are also trained in search and rescue. The Tervuren is a loving companion dog.
