Do tarantulas make a good pet?

+3 votes
I am considering getting a tarantuala for my son. He thinks they're cool. Do they make good pets? Can you take them out of their cage and play with them or do you just watch them through the glass?

On the plus side, tarantulas as pets are quiet, don't require much space and can be fascinating to watch. There are over 800 species and care and housing needs depend on which you choose. Most don't care to be handled much. They can bite, but usually choose to retreat from anything they consider a threat. The venom is dangerous to people with allergies as anaphylactic shock can occur. People can also have skin allergies to the spider itself. As with all pets, do your research and learn as much as you can before choosing one as a pet.
