The American Water Spaniel is a muscular, hardy dog, 15-18 inches tall, weighing 25-45 lbs. The head is wide with a pronounced stop and a square muzzle. Ears are long and wide. Eyes are round. The tail is medium length and slightly curved. The coat is medium length, wavy to curly, and resistant to bad weather and cold water. Colors are solid liver, brown or dark chocolate.

These are sensitive dogs and respond well to training that is positive, not harsh. They are obedient and want to please their human. They are good with children, but should be socialized early. They may get along with other dogs and are okay with other types of pets although some do chase cats and other small animals. These Spaniels do have a tendency to bark a lot. They need vigorous exercise and long daily walks.
