It’s that time to check your pet supplies. Just as we humans go through our closets and dressers at regular intervals, we should do the same for our pet’s “stuff.” Veterinarians advise that cleaning, repairing or tossing out pet equipment is an important step in keeping your pet healthy.
For example, I’m not a fan of retractable leashes, but I’m aware they are used. I believe they pose a danger for you and your dog. Injuries resulting from the use of retractable leashes can be horrific. They also may train your dog to pull even more, something that’s not acceptable. When extended you have little control to keep your dog safe. Consider instead tossing the retractable and using a 6 foot leash that will give you more control and keep you and your dog safe.
Plastic food and water dishes may be inexpensive but can be costly to the health of your pet. The plastic breaks down eventually and contains toxic chemicals that can get into your pet’s food. Plastic can be difficult to clean thoroughly and can become a haven for bacteria. Pieces can break off and be swallowed by your pet. For safety’s sake, choose stainless steel, porcelain or glass dishes. Wash them frequently and when the become scratched or difficult to clean well, replace them.
